Johannes Erler, born 1965, studied communication design and worked for Lo Breier, Erik Spiekermann, and Neville Brody, before founding Factor Design in 1993 and becoming one of the most distinguished German designers. In 2010 he founded BJE Bureau Johannes Erler in the areas of corporate design and editorial design for companies, institutions and publishers from business (eg Mercedes-Benz), politics (eg Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg) and culture (eg Staatstheater Stuttgart and Deutsche Oper Berlin). From 2012 to 2014 Erler was also Art Director of the magazine Stern.
Communication for theater – how it is and what needs to change
Almost all theaters in Germany suffer from massive losses of viewers. On the one hand, this is because the media supply is constantly growing. On the other hand, the theaters have for years missed adapting their communication to the behavior of their audience. It governs the dramaturgical internal view, which overlooks the increasing loss of relevance almost negligently. Johannes Erler provides insights into his creative and journalistic work for numerous theaters and how he is making their communication more comprehensible, accessible, relevant and networked – on all media channels.
