Raise your hand if you have ever tried a face filter on Instagram! No doubt, pretty much everyone using the photo platform has used a face filter to augment one´s face and the reality around oneself.

Ever since Instagram has made it possible for everyone to design and upload their filter creations, it has become a huge playground for designers and creatives. And ever since then, face filters have been undergoing a transformation and have become more artistic, more futuristic, more surreal, and therefore a big part of the virtual design world.

Prime example: Forward Festival speaker Ines Alpha. The 3D make-up-artist is at the forefront of the digital beauty revolution. “I personally am a bit bored with today’s Kim Kardashianesque beauty standards. Beauty is an emotion, it’s very personal. It’s okay to be weird and different”, she told us. With her virtual art, Ines wants to encourage people to have fun with their image and play around with their appearances. Her daily 3D-make-up routine contains colors, gloss, holographic rainbow textures, anti-gravitational fluid movement and, otherworldly sounds: “ I open my 3D-makeup apps on my digital mirror, choose my favourite look, maybe change the colour and textures to fit my clothes and that’s it!”
Ines has collaborated with global brands like Nike or H&M or a beauty filter for Essence cosmetics. Her futuristic face filter designs are about to send to space: With being part of the Toucan Art Space Project, her unique 3D postcard will be sent out of space.

Johanna Jaskowska is another face filter star. Johanna was one of the first ones, who have uploaded their self-created face filter to Instagram. What happened next sounds like a fairytale: her filter went viral, she grew her community to over 600k followers and has worked with stars like Billie Eilish ever since.
With her work, the digital creative wants to explore how it looks when our body merges with tech and how beauty could look on it. The artist loves the fact that she can influence how the future will look like. While face filters are already part of our reality, Johanna thinks ahead: she believes that soon our wardrobe will be digital. With body filters or even augmented lenses could replace our analog clothes. What does sound freaky, would actually make perfect sense.
